About us

The house was originally owned by Broadstone's doctor, Dr Norman, and is still known to some locals as “the Doctor's house”. Having been extended and adapted for use as a care home, it is thought that Southmead has been serving the area since around the mid 1950s.
To this day, Southmead maintains a reputation for being a warm, friendly family home, having survived many of the changes which saw so many similar homes disappear. We strongly believe that there remains an important place for such homes in the community.
Management
Southmead Rest Home has been owned and operated by its Resident Proprietors, Mr and Mrs Robert Fletcher, since 1989. Mrs Penny Fletcher is the home's Care Manager and Registered Person. Penny trained in nursing at the Middlesex Hospital in London, and went on to become a State Certified Midwife at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. To combine raising a family with being able to continue to serve the nursing needs of a community, the ownership of a retirement home proved to be a successful combination.
Mrs Fletcher attained the Registered Manager's Award in 2005.
Mr Robert Fletcher has retired from an independent career in the electronics industry to take more care of the garden and accounting at Southmead. He is also the business administrator at two other non-competing care homes in the Dorset area.
